Setup guide
Setting up your first AI assistant takes about two minutes. You do not need to install anything, and you do not need an API key.
The three steps
- Create your assistant — give it a name.
- Connect your AI brain — sign in to Nous Research.
- Say hello — send it a message.
Your dashboard shows a Getting started checklist that ticks these off as you go, and always links to the next one.
1. Sign in
Go to the sign-in page and enter your email address. We email you a link, and the same email contains a 6-digit code you can type instead.
- No password to remember — the link or the code signs you in.
- Each link works once and expires after 15 minutes. If it has already been used (some work email systems open links automatically), just type the code.
- Nothing arrives? Check the spam folder, then request a new link.
New here? Enter your email and your request goes to the administrator for approval. You'll be able to sign in with an emailed link and code once the account is approved — there's no invite code to enter.
2. Create your assistant
From your dashboard, choose + New Agent. You'll be asked for:
- A name — whatever you'll recognise, for example "Sarah's Sales Assistant".
- What it helps with — General Assistant is already selected and is right for almost everyone.
- How it's powered — leave the default, Use a subscription. One subscription covers hundreds of models, and there's a free plan if you just want to try it.
You create the agent before signing in to the subscription — that's expected. Your new agent starts on a free model, and we'll ask you to sign in on the very next screen.
3. Connect your AI brain
A Nous Research subscription gives your agent access to the models your plan includes, and you are billed by them directly — Simple Agents never sees your card. Here's what happens:
- On the agent's page, click Connect under Finish setting up.
- A short code appears. Click Open Nous Portal — it opens a new tab where you sign in (or create an account) and approve the request.
- If you're asked for the code, type the one shown in Simple Agents.
- Come back to this tab. It updates by itself — you'll be taken straight to choosing a model.
This is a one-time step per account. Every agent you create afterwards uses the same subscription.
Not sure which plan you have? The portal shows it, and you can change it there at any time.
4. Pick your model
Once you're connected, you'll see Pick your model. The list shows every model your plan can use, cheapest first — use the search box or the filters (📷 Vision, 🎤 Audio, 🔧 Tools, 🆓 Free) to narrow it down.
A free plan includes fewer models than a paid one. That's normal — you can change the model any time from the agent's page, so it's easy to try another.
5. Say hello
Open the chat and send it something — the boxes on the welcome screen are a good place to start ("What can you do?"). You can also attach a file or a photo with the 📎 button.
Every conversation is saved, and you can start a new one at any time from the sidebar. If your agent asks for permission before doing something (like running a command), you'll see the request in the chat with Approve / Deny buttons.
Prefer to use your own provider?
If you already have an API key (OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI or DeepSeek) or run a model locally, choose I'll bring my own provider on the create screen. You can paste the key there — no need to go to Settings first.
With your own provider, your agent's usage is billed by that provider under your account with them.
If something isn't working
"Your account is awaiting approval"
You're signed in, but an administrator hasn't approved the account yet. Nothing to do — you'll hear from us when it's ready.
The agent page still says "Finish setting up"
The subscription isn't connected yet (or the sign-in was cancelled). Click Connect and approve in the Portal tab. If you were asked for a code, make sure you typed the one shown on the page.
No models appear in the list
If you're using your own provider, check the key is saved in Settings and hasn't expired. If you're on a subscription, you may need to disconnect and connect again.
The agent shows "disconnected" or won't reply
Open the agent's page and press ▶ Start. If it still won't answer, send a message in the chat anyway — you'll get a plain-English reason and we're notified.
I don't want to use a subscription
You can switch an agent to your own provider from its page, at any time. See Prefer to use your own provider?
